The Moscow Kremlin State Historical Museum-Preserve combines not only art and historical museums located Archangelsky and Blagoveschensky Cathedrals, but also Russia's main cathedral, the Uspensky Cathedral, the Chirch of the Depozition of the Robe, the Museum of Crafts and Arts of home Life of the 17th century, and the Armory Chamber.

Territory, cathedrals and bell tower

The Armoury was first established as an arms and armour workshop attached to the royal court. Jewellers and icon painters arrived later. The work of the Kremlin masters ceased under Peter the Great, and in the 18th century, the Armoury became a royal treasury. The Armoury was the first museum in Moscow. Now, it is a world–renowned museum, a unique treasure–house containing a wealth of articles of decorative and applied arts of Russia, European countries and of the Orient of the 4th to the 20th centuries. The Armoury is located in a building specially erected for it by architect Konstantin Ton in 1844-1851.

Now, it displays ancient arms, the tsars` crown jewels and many magnificent works of art. Here, you will see unique specimens of Russian and foreign craftsmanship, royal regalia and gifts from ambassadors. You will admire the famous golden "cap" of Vladimir Monomakh, used to crown all Russian tsars until Peter I, and the imperial crown of Catherine I, made of gilded silver. The Armoury has the finest collection of old English silverware in the world, made by London silversmiths of the 16th and 17th centuries, Faberge Easter eggs and a unique collection of carriages spanning the 16th and 18th centuries. The collection makes it one of the most impressive museums in Moscow.

The Novodevichy convent , or New Maiden’s, was founded in 1524 to commemorate Vasily III’s capture of Smolensk from the Poles a decade earlier. It had many highborn nuns and often played a role in politics – one of its own nuns prevented the convent from being blown up by the French in 1812, by snuffing out the fuses. Ravaged during the Time of Troubles, the convent was rebuild in the 1680’s by the Regent Sofia, who was later confined here by Peter the Great, along with his unwanted first wife. In 1922 the convent was turned into a museum, which spared it form a worse fate until the cathedral was returned to the Church in 1945 as a reward for supporting the war effort. Restoration work began in the 1960’s and in 1988 an Episcopal see was established here.
Thought still officially a museum, Novodevichy is once again a convent.

Excursion to Kuskovo Museum Estate. The ensemble "Kuskovo", originally owned by the Sheremetyevfamily, is a specimen of a typical 18th century Moscow region residence/ The estate was designed as a site for rceptions, celebrations and other festivities. More than 20 unique monuments of architecture with genuine interiors are presented, including a Datch Palace, an Italian museum, a Grotto, a Greenhouse, and others. Another point of interest in "Kuskovo Estate" is the only regular French park to survive in Moscow. Trip to Kolomenskoye. Different monuments compose the ensemble of Kolomenckoye, such as the architectural monuments of the 16th - 19th-century remains of the tsar's estate, as well as those of the Old Russian wooden architecture of the 17th - 18th centuries brought to Kolomenskoye. The 15th - 17th century tsarist estate has preserved its original layout and unique architectural monuments, including Church of the Ascension (1532) - a pearl of Russian tent-shaped architecture.

Excursion to the Tretiakov Gallery - a wonderful museum of Russian fine art. Works exhibited in the Gallery embrace a long period of painting spanning from Russian and Byzantine icons of the 12th centery to examples of Russian avant-garde of the 1920s. The collections comprice over 5000 pictures, more than 3000 sculptures, and over 30000 drawings and engravings.

Excursion to the A.Pushkin State museum of Fine Arts. The Museum was opened on the 100th aniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812. The Museum was based on the wxamples of the plaster cast museums at European universities. At present the collection of the Puskin Museum of Fine Arts constitutes more than 500000 works of art - paintings and sculptures, graphic art, decorative art, archeological monuments and numismatic items, and photography.

Spaso-Andronikov monastery. This is Moscow’s third Fortress monastery. Metropolitan of Moscow, founded it in 1360. He chose the site for the monastery himself. It located on the left bank of the Yauza river, at the intersection of two roads: one leading to Ryazan and further to the Tatar-Mongol Horde and the other, to Vladimir. Monk Andronik, a disciple of Sergius of Radonezhsky, was elected prior of the monastery, which was subsequently named after him
In the 1420’s, the Spassky Cathedral, made of stone, was erected on the grounds of the Andronikov Monastery. The grate Russian icon painter Andrey Rublev and Yermola, a merchant, contributed to its construction. They both were buried in the monastery.

Sergiev Posad. The town and monastery of the 14th century named after the famous saint Sergiy Radonezhskiy has become a kind of Russian Vatican. The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Laura (the Greek word “laura” means monastery) houses a seminary, a museum of history, and guards many famous icons, monuments of antiquity and a huge library of religious literature. A whole-day excursion to Sergiev Posad features a tour round the town, Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Laura, the Laura treasury Riznitsa, and lunch in the restaurant Risky Dvorik, Russian style. Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Besides the ancient fortifications, one of the great attractions is Peter and Paul Cathedral, built by the architect Trezini in 1733, with the burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian tsars. Soon after its foundation, the fortress became the first political prison in Russia, reserved for the most important state prisoners. The museum in Trubetskoy bastion prison is open for the public.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral built in 1858 by the architect Montferrand is the 4-th in height among one-cupola’s cathedrals in the world after St. Peter’s in Rome, St. Paul’s in London and Santa Maria del Fiorre in Florence. The richly adorned interior, lined with marble, and with malachite and lazurite columns, was intended for up to 10000 worshippers. Standing on the broad Isaac’s square, its golden dome can be seen all over the city. On a clear day the observation platform at the foot of the dome commands a fine view over St. Petersburg and its surroundings.

Our Saviour on the Blood. One of the loveliest beauty spots located in the heart of St. Petersburg is the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, built in the old Russian style with, unusual for the city, onion-shaped domes. It was constructed in 1907 at the place where Russian Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded by a terrorist`s bomb in 1881. The church is unique, interior and exterior being richly decorated with fabulous mosaics.

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg ranks among the most famous museums in the world. The whole complex of Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre is known as the "State Hermitage". The setting is magnificent and lavish; malachite, jasper, agate and marble provide a fine backdrop to the treasures.

The Hermitage collection shows the development of art and material culture in the West and the East from prehistoric times to the present day. There are remarkable collections of paintings, prints, sculptures as well as tapestries, carpets, objects d`art, archeological finds, furniture and unique articles of jewellery.

The Russian Museum is a treasure-house of national culture. The museum`s collection of Russian art is next in importance to that of the Tretyakov Gallery. Outstanding is its collection of icons, including the 12th century Angel with Golden Hair and works of Rublyov and Ushakov. The Russian museum is housed in the palace of Grand Duke Michael, the youngest son of Emperor Paul. It was designed by the architect Rossi in 1825, in the style of a nobleman`s town estate.

Peterhof is located at the seaside, some 29 kilometres from the centre of St. Petersburg. It is known throughout the world as a jewel of Russian art, a place of parks, palaces and fountains. In the past, it was an exquisite summer residence for Russian tsars. Peter the Great was the first to realise that he would need not only a new capital and a naval base on the Gulf of Finland, but also a new country palace. He commissioned a Versailles-by-the-sea from the French architect Leblon, who liked many of the tsar`s ideas and soon translated them into reality. Nowadays, the whole complex comprises the Grand Palace, the Lower and the Upper Parks with several park pavilions, 150 fountains and five monumental cascades. The Grand Palace was redesigned by Bartolomeo Rastrelly, the favourite architect of Peter`s daughter, Elizabeth, in the mid 18th century. Its fabulous Baroque decoration surpasses any expectations. The palace houses collections of Russian and European paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelain and crystal ware. From the marble terrace of the Grand Palace, there is a magnificent view over the Grand Cascade, made up of waterfalls, 64 fountains and 37 statues.

Pavlovsk is a superb palace-and-park ensemble of the late 18th - early 19th century, situated 30 kilometres from St. Petersburg. It was used as a summer residence for the Russian emperor Paul I and his family. Charles Cameron was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the heir-apparent`s residence, but when Paul came to the throne, he brought in Vinchenzo Brenna who added romantic touches to Cameron`s classical design.

The Great Palace stands on a high bluff overlooking the river and dominates the surrounding parkland. The landscape park, one of the largest in Europe, covers an area of 600 hectares.
